How to Choose the Right Packaging Design Agency

What to look for when choosing a packaging design agency: relevant portfolio, print knowledge, process, deliverables and the questions to ask before you commit.

Packaging is expensive to get wrong: a design that does not print properly, or does not stand out on shelf, costs more than the design fee. These are the things worth checking before you choose a partner.

1. A portfolio of real, printed packs

Look for packaging that has actually been produced, not only concept renders. Ask to see photos of printed packs, or physical samples, and ask what the brief was for each project.

2. Print and production knowledge

Ask how they handle dielines, bleed, colour counts, white ink on films, barcodes and printer proofs. A packaging designer should be comfortable talking to your converter.

3. A clear process

  • How do they research your category and competitors?
  • How many concept routes will you see, and how are they presented?
  • How many revision rounds are included?
  • Who prepares final artwork for each SKU?

4. Deliverables in writing

Confirm exactly what you receive: number of SKUs, panels, mockups, file formats, and whether source files and usage rights are included.

5. Brand thinking, not just decoration

The best packaging comes from understanding the brand and the shopper. Choose a partner who asks about your customers, price point and retail channel — not only which colours you like.

Questions to ask before you commit

  1. Have you designed packaging in my category or format?
  2. Can I see printed examples?
  3. Will you work directly with my printer?
  4. What do you need from me, and when?
  5. What is the timeline for concepts, artwork and print-ready files?
